KAI x RYCHÈL THÉRIN | Studio Dinner

Saturday 25 May 2019

Manaakitanga. Whanaungatanga. Kaitiakitanga.

By sharing culture with hospitality, we create positive and meaningful relationships.

He aha te mea nui i te ao? He tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata.

What is the most important thing in the world? It is the people, the people, the people.

(Māori proverb)

In 2018 I took part in the Open Studio weekend of Art Walk 18, a yearly arts festival in the 18th district of Vienna. For this, I set my studio up as a small gallery, with a retrospective of old and new work.

Once the weekend was over, I left the work up. I wanted to use the space for another artistic event. After some collective brainstorming, my sister and I decided to collaborate and host a Studio Dinner in the space, where all of the food served would be based on the artwork and my lines of research.

Kai, korero and manaakitanga are all keystones of my practice, and offer pathways towards gesamtkunstwerk - creating an activated space and environment enveloping art and people in relation to and with each other, with all your senses.

As always, kia ora to my whanau for supporting my out there ideas, thank you to our guests, who brought the room to life and herzlichen dank an Katrin Bernreiter for the beautiful documentation.
