New works by Rychèl Thérin to show at the Berni Gallery

The Berni Gallery at the Jersey Arts Centre in St Helier is hosting an exhibition of new photographic works by local artist Rychèl Thérin entitled Collected Memories, Collecting Dust. The exhibition will be open on Monday 6 June and continue through Saturday 25 June 2011. The Private View will be held at the gallery on Monday 6 June from 5:30-7pm. An Artist in Conversation session will be held at the Gallery on Saturday 25 June between 12-2pm. This is a chance for the public to meet the artist in person to discuss the work. Collected Memories, Collecting Dust is the young artists first major solo show since 2008.

Rychèl Thérin has been working with photography since finishing her BA in Fine Art Painting in 2007. Her photographs often reference the paintings of the old masters, using light and composition to create a sense of romance and nostalgia.

The images in Collected Memories, Collecting Dust reference Jersey’s Temps Passé, local traditions based around agriculture and family life. While there is much talk about the diminishing Jerriais language, the lived memories and culture of the Islands oldest generations are fading from view too. Thérins photographs create a portrait of an aging woman with so many more stories to tell.

Thérin completed her BA in Fine Art Painting at Camberwell College of Arts, London and in 2009 gained a PGDip in Maori Visual Arts from Massey University, New Zealand. She is currently studying towards a Masters in Maori Visual Art through Massey University and is due to graduate in May 2012. Thérin has participated in group exhibitions in Jersey and abroad and held three solo shows locally at the Sir John Cheshire Gallery.
